Our Vision & Mission

Climate change is without doubt one of the biggest challenges of our time. As climate change is accelerating at an unprecedented pace, it is inevitable for humanity to more actively and collectively combat climate change. Various political, economic, academic and civil society actors have been trying to contribute to a more sustainable world in diverse ways. In this sense, governments around the world have established sustainable development goals and strategies, and the UN has released the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Companies are increasingly bringing green products on the market. Universities across the globe are expanding their teaching and research activities in sustainability science, climate resilience and environmental studies. Civil society actors, including non-governmental organizations, have been increasingly involved in global environmental processes by establishing transnational grassroots networks and have thus become key drivers in global environmental governance.

Despite the various approaches and strategies in promoting sustainability undertaken by these diverse actors, they all draw on collective action. Whether it is on a local, national, international or transnational level - promoting sustainability requires collective action. In addition, they all make use of data. Data is not only crucial for measuring climate change, it also plays a key role for various actors to understand their own and other actor’s impact on the environment. Data is the key point of entry to evaluating more sustainable alternative courses of action. Therefore, it plays a vital role in making our world more sustainable.

As the amount of data available around the world continues to grow, there is a lack of platforms enabling the diverse group of key climate change stakeholders and changemakers to make their knowledge and sustainability data accessible to all in a very efficient manner through a central registry. The Organization for Sustainable Consumption (OfnK) initiated the European Open Sustainability Registry (EU-OSR) to provide a solution to this challenge.

What is currently missing is a standard and a register to manage and share this type of data. The purpose of the EU-OSR is to accumulate this data and make it accessible to all. To gain transparency and visibility against the backdrop of our environmental impact, we urgently need a publicly accessible and central register for all sustainability data. The Open Sustainability Registry enables all stakeholders in the EU to monitor the targets set by businesses and policymakers, and to measure their progress in this area. At the same time, it serves as a helpful and reliable tool that enables consumers to make more sustainable purchasing decisions.

Our vision is to make sustainability data accessible to everyone.
Our mission is to create the leading collaborative, free and transparent sustainability data knowledge network and connect political, economic, academic and civil society actors.
