Available Country-Specific Carbon Footprint Data based on the Open Payment Standard

Carbon emissions are very dependent on the country/area in which people live. Therefore, the Open Payment Standard approaches carbon footprint calculations from a country level of analysis, allowing the aggregate outcome variable (carbon emission) to vary in a methodologically sound way for valid comparison and inference. Moreover, providing individualized carbon footprint data requires a classification of the bank data into consumption categories. For each consumption category, a carbon footprint value can be calculated, which is specified in the following unit: gram of CO2 per currency.

Furthermore, additional data is needed in order to calculate individual carbon footprints based on bank transactions. Specifically, matching a financial transaction to a category and thereby to a carbon emission is done in three ways:

  1. With Merchant Category Codes (MCCs) provided by the financial institution for credit card payments
  2. With service providers, such as FinTechSystems, to categorize SEPA/Direct Debit Payments
  3. By merchant name via the standard algorithm for debit payments / SEPA transactions if not categorized.

Below you can view the carbon footprint data employed for the calculation of country specific individual carbon footprints linked to MCCs. The EU-OSR confidence score is an indicator for the accuracy of the data. While the lowest score 1 reveals that no or biased data sources were used, the highest score 10 implies that clear and verified data sources were employed.
